Bolga baskets are bold, bright and beautiful! Hand-woven with veta vera grass, commonly called “Elephant Grass,” native to the region. The families of the Bulgatanga area are rural farmers who struggle with agriculture due to the geographic area’s erratic rainfall pattern and harsh weather conditions. Bolgatanga literally means “soft soil, rocky land,” The soil is not fertile enough for extensive agricultural pursuits. Bolgatanga is also known as the crafts center of northern Ghana, with a large central market where crafts are bartered. Weaving has been a traditional skill of these people for generations. The handicraft activity of basket weaving is undertaken by women to supplement their incomes from subsistence farming activities to pay for their children’s educations.
It takes approximately three to four days to weave one standard Bolga basket; this does not include collecting and preparing the materials. The straw is gathered, split, twisted, untwisted and dyed before weaving begins. The handles are covered with home-tanned goats’ hide.
These baskets are made to hold tremendous weight; they are wonderful for garden produce, books, newspapers, magazines, sewing materials AND GENEALOGY!
